How do I authenticate my FAFSA? ›

You must set up at least one two-step verification method (SMS text, email, or authenticator app). While SMS text and emails are options for receiving your authentication code (see below), we highly recommend using an authenticator app. (Using an authenticator app is not required to create a StudentAid.gov account.)

What happens if I don't complete FAFSA verification process? Your college can withhold your financial aid until you've completed the verification process. To avoid any delays in your financial aid, submit the information requested by your college as soon as you can.

During verification, the college financial aid administrator will ask the applicant to supply copies of documentation, such as income tax returns, W-2 statements and 1099 forms, to verify the data that was submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

How long does the verification process take? Verification processing time is generally two to three weeks during peak season (June-October), and one to two weeks during non-peak season (November-May). Therefore, students should start the process as soon as possible.

The U.S. Department of Education selects around 25 percent of all filers for verification. Your FAFSA being selected for verification may not be a problem.

You must contact Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243 prior to completing and submitting this form and providing documentation of identity.

If the ID verification is unsuccessful, you'll receive an email titled, “Your StudentAid.gov Account Has Not Been Verified.” This could happen because of poor image quality of the uploaded documents. If you believe the image quality is the issue, you can retry the process.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, recognizing that the pandemic already created enough burdens for students, their families, and colleges, the Department chose to reduce the percentage of students selected for verification from 18% to 3-4%, targeting only cases of likely fraud.

What happens if I submit my FAFSA without signatures? ›

Your FAFSA form will be partially processed without signatures, and you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within 3–5 days. Without your signature, an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) won't be calculated, and you won't be able to receive federal student aid.

What happens if I don't complete verification? If you fail to submit verification documents and complete the process, you will not be eligible for Title IV aid. Incomplete verification may result in cancellation of your financial aid.

If you can't or don't provide this information to the school when asked, the student may not receive federal student aid. If the student receives federal student aid based on incorrect or fraudulent information, they'll have to pay it back. You may also have to pay fines and fees.

Schools you list on the application will automatically receive your FAFSA results electronically. Note: Schools will not be able to see which other schools you listed on your FAFSA form. You should add any school that you plan on applying to, or that you have applied to, even if you haven't been accepted yet.

Your FAFSA status can be found on the “My FAFSA” page, which you'll see right after you log in if you've started or completed a FAFSA form.

After the student successfully submits their FAFSA form, they'll receive a “Confirmation” page with a confirmation number. The confirmation number is proof that the student successfully submitted their FAFSA form or correction. The student should print a copy of their “Confirmation” page for their records.
